The Last Temptation of Christ plus introduction
Monday 19 August, 2024 7.15 p.m.
August’s edition of Scorsese of the Month is selected and introduced by GFT Programme Manager Paul Gallagher.
Never one to shy away from a challenge, Martin Scorsese dived headlong into controversy with his 1988 adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis’ novel, an exploration of Jesus’ humanity and divinity that imagined the possibility of Christ renouncing his role as saviour. Like several of Scorsese’s most personal films (Gangs of New York, The Age of Innocence, Silence), Last Temptation took many years of development and had many false starts before he was finally able to bring his version of it to the big screen. What he produced was a searching and deeply serious interrogation of the foundational Christian story, with a style and unique approach to the subject that could only have come from Scorsese.
