The Other Half of the Empire: Scots and early British colonialism in Asia c. 1690-c.1820. Online talk by Dr Andrew McKillop, Glasgow University, for Black History Month 2020.
Debates on the historical origins of inequality and racism in Scotland often focus, understandably, on the legacies of involvement in transatlantic slavery. But the British Empire was global in scale, conquering millions in Asia even as it transported enslaved people to the Americas. This talk surveys the growing number of Scots in the Asian half of the Empire and reflects on what this tells us about the colonial and global roots of enduring inequalities and racism in modern Scotland.
