Wild Men – Glasgow Film Festival

In Thomas Daneskov’s black comedy, which will appeal to Coen brothers’ fans, Martin (Rasmus Bjerg) is having a mid-life crisis and, complete with  homemade Viking attire, has fled from Denmark to the woods high in the Norwegian mountains.

His solution to go back to nature and hunt for survival doesn’t go to plan and the hapless, would-be Viking struggles to survive. Desperate for food he heads to a gas station– when he cannot pay and gets into a fight with the owner he finds himself in trouble with the police.

This is just the start of a crime caper complete with bullets, bloodshed. An unlikely friendship develops when Martin encounters Musa (Zaki Youssef), an injured drug dealer, who has made off with the takings after being in a car accident with his accomplices.

The two bad guys are soon in hot pursuit, Martin’s wife is also tracking him down and the droll local chief of police Oyvind (Bjorn Sundquist), a widower in mourning with his own unique take on what’s good and what’s bad, is also on Martin and Musa’s trail.

It’s an enjoyable film with great characters – despite the violence it’s an amusing film peppered with just enough psychological musings to raise the film up beyond the absurd.

A bonus is the spectacular scenery.
