Collecting African Art at The Hunterian
Thursday, 22 February, 2024, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Hunterian Art Gallery, 82 Hillhead Street Glasgow G12 8QQ
‘The Trembling Museum’ shows African art objects from The Hunterian collection in a new context. Taking them out of the ‘ethnography’ section of our museum store, and displaying them alongside contemporary artworks in the art gallery, ‘The Trembling Museum’ asks questions about how African art has been classified in Western institutions, and how it can be understood differently.
The objects in the exhibition range from musical instruments such as drums and lutes, to sculptures, paintings, clothing and more. Join our Curator of Archaeology and World Cultures Dr. Andy Mills in the Hunterian Art Gallery for a discussion around how these objects and artworks came to be part of the Hunterian collection.
