Two books that discuss different aspects of the formidable North Sea.
Saturnine and quick-tempered, the formidable North Sea is a playground, a theatre of war and a cultural crossing-point, it has shaped the world in myriad ways, Tom Blass’s The Naked Shore takes us around the edges of the North Sea meeting fishermen, artists and bomb disposal experts. Tom will be joined by Donald S. Murray whose Herring Tales Follows a journey from the western edge of Norway to Shetland and from the Outer Hebrides to the Baltic coast of Germany telling tales of the fish that was of central importance to the lives of our ancestors, noting how both it – and those involved in their capture – were celebrated in the art, literature, music and folklore of northern Europe.
